Spending Money

As Inclusive As Possible..

We try to ensure our projects are inclusive as possible, including transport, resorts, accommodation, excursions, activities and the vast majority of meals throughout your time in Fiji. However, there are a few things you may wish to buy locally in Fiji. Below we list some common items snd approximate budgets…

Currency..

  • The currency in Fiji is the Fiji Dollar.
  • It is not necessary to take Fijian dollars with you as you can withdraw money easily within Fiji using cash machines in the towns, resorts and at the airport.

Withdrawing Money In Fiji

  • It is best just to simply bring a debit card and withdraw money in Fiji (you may wish to advise your bank that you will be in Fiji, so your card isn’t blocked)
  • We do not advise carrying large amounts of cash or pre-ordering money.
  • Prepaid charge cards, travellers cheques etc are not advised as they often don’t work in Fiji.
  • You can withdraw money as you land at Fiji’s international airports and cash machines are located in all towns and urban areas
  • Many resorts also accept card payments

Emergencies

  • We would advise having a spare debit or credit card, just in case of emergencies such as medical fees, or if you card is blocked / does not work for any reason.

You can get by on the Study Internship without much spending money at all… all transport, accomadation and food for the entirety of the project is covered. Ultimately, your spending money is completely up to you. As you will be based in Suva and resorts for a significant period of project, you may wish to indulge in the occasional treat every now and again. In general, we advise budgeting spending money at around:

  • £400-600 GBP

What You May Wish To Buy In Fiji..

  • We advise buying some Fijian clothes during your time in Suva ahead of travelling to the village. You may wish to budget $100 – 150 FJD depending on how much you wish to get! As you are joining a Study Internship, you are not going to be spending long in a rural setting but you will be required to have at least one set of ‘formal clothing’ (see Kit List for more details) and a casual sulu.
  • When based in Suva, there are plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants you may wish to try out… it’s completely up to you how much you budget for this.

Buying Fijian Clothes…

As mentioned, you have the opportunity to buy traditional Fijian clothes during your briefing. Please budget (Prices are in Fiji Dollars)

  • Men’s Formal sulu – $40
  • Men’s Bula Shirt – $30
  • Fijian Dress – $45
  • Sulu – $15

Covid Tests in Fiji

It may be a requirement to have a Covid test upon departure from Fiji. This will naturally depend on the current regulations at the time for international travel. Just in case, we advise you to anticipate between $30 FJD and $200 FJD (depending on whether this will need to be a PCR test or Rapid Antigen Test).

Additional / Optional Activities…

  • You may have a chance to take part in optional activities at resorts before and after the project.
  • The sky dive is particularly popular and can be organised during the final few days in Fiji. Approximate costs for Skydiving is £300 – £350, depending on height of the jump and extras (DVD, photos etc.)
  • Please note that these activities are not organised by Think Pacific or part of the itinerary itself.
