Dress Code in Suva

Unlike in the village setting, clothing in the city (or at least customs around the use of traditional clothing) is much less strict. This is partly due to Western influences that come with the bustling city, the city itself being separate from ‘traditional land’ of the vanua. Because of this, you will generally see people wearing far more ‘Western style clothing’ in comparison to day to day clothing in the village. But, although you may dress slightly differently in the city to the villages, this does not necessarily we can wear absolutely anything and we still want to keep our standards high.

We will still be using the categories of ‘formal’ and ‘informal’ for the dress code in Suva.

Informal

Day to day clothing for the team in the city may look like:

Boys

  • T-shirt
  • Shorts / Trousers

*Still no vests for the boys

Girls

  • T-shirt
  • Shorts / Skirt

*Sulu does not have to be worn for girls. Shorts do not have to be knee length, but make sure they are not too short! Likewise, no crop tops please or generally overly revealing clothing.

Formal

Formal clothing will look much like what formal wear would be in the village. This will be worn during partner interactions, during presentations or university events.

Boys

  • Bula shirt / Shirt
  • Trousers / Pocket sulu

Girls

  • Smart blouse + maxi skirt
  • Jamba / Bula Dress
